What is NDIS Short-Term Accommodation?

Short-Term Accommodation is funding for a supported stay somewhere other than your usual home for a short period. The NDIS uses the term STA; most families still call it respite – the two mean the same thing in practice.

Stays are usually up to 14 days at a time, and many plans allow around 28 days a year, which can be used as one block or spread across several shorter stays. The daily rate bundles accommodation, support workers, food and activities into a single price, so there are no surprises.

STA is designed to do two jobs at once: give you new experiences, skills and friendships, and give the people who usually support you time to rest. Need something longer than 14 days? Ask about medium-term SIL on the Gold Coast.

Trusted respite care on the Gold Coast

Handing over care even for a weekend takes trust. Kuremara has provided disability and primary health support in Queensland for more than a decade, and our STA teams are backed by the same clinicians who support our long-term homes.

“Quality support services when choice matters.”

– Kuremara

Familiar faces.  Where possible, the same workers support your repeat stays, so each visit starts from trust, not introductions.

Clinical back-up. Community nurses, a psychologist, a mental health nurse, and allied health are on the team; doctors are on call 24/7 via Priority Health Group.

Careful matching. Guests are grouped by age, interests, and support needs, and you can request a single-guest stay.

Registered and audited. NDIS registration 4-GIGSGY1, so agency-, plan- and self-managed participants can all book.

Transparent pricing. Quoted at NDIS price-guide STA rates, all-inclusive – you know the cost before you book.

A pathway, not a dead end. If a stay shows you’re ready for more independence, we can move you into SIL or ILO without changing providers.

For support coordinators & hospital discharge teams

Send a referral with dates, support ratio, and any risk or behaviour-support information; we respond within one business day with availability and a quote at price-guide rates. Emergency and step-down requests are triaged the same day, seven days a week.

NDIS Short-Term Accommodation Gold Coast – FAQs

Is STA the same as respite under the NDIS?

Yes. Short-Term Accommodation is the NDIS funding category for what most people call respite, a supported stay away from home. It covers accommodation, support, food, and activities for up to 14 days at a time.

How many days of STA can I use each year?

There is no fixed rule, but the NDIS commonly funds up to 28 days a year, in blocks of up to 14 days. You can use it as one longer stay or several weekends. If you need more – for example after hospital – ask us about Medium-Term Accommodation or medium-term SIL.

Does STA need to be a specific line in my NDIS plan?

Usually not. STA is claimed from your flexible Core Assistance with Daily Life budget. As long as a stay is reasonable and necessary for your goals or your carers’ sustainability, most participants can book without a plan change. We will check your budget before quoting.

Can the NDIS fund a holiday on the Gold Coast?

The NDIS funds the support and accommodation component of an STA stay, not tourism itself. A supported stay with Kuremara on the Gold Coast can include beach days, theme parks and outings as part of your activity plan; entry tickets and personal spending are paid by you.

Do you offer emergency respite on the Gold Coast?

Yes, subject to availability. Call 1300 000 799 we triage emergency requests the same day and will be upfront about what we can offer and when. If we cannot help immediately, we will point you to who can.

Can you support high medical or behavioural needs during a stay?

Yes. Kuremara specialises in participants with medical and psychosocial needs. STA teams are supported by community nursing, behaviour support, an in-house psychologist and mental health nurse, and 24/7 telehealth doctors through Priority Health Group.

What should I bring to an STA stay?

Clothes, toiletries, medications in Webster packs or original packaging with a current medication chart, any mobility or communication aids, and anything that makes a room feel like yours. Meals, linen, and towels are provided.

Can STA be used to trial living away from home before SIL?

Yes – it is one of the most valuable uses of STA. A short stay lets you and your family see how you manage with rostered support, and gives us evidence to support a SIL request if that is the right next step.
