What is Short Term Respite (STR/STA)?
Our short term respite services offer a home away from home. Spend time apart from your usual care arrangements, relax, and recharge in comfortable, supportive surroundings.
Under the NDIS, short term respite is the support that used to be called short term accommodation (STA) — and before that, respite. The name was updated to better reflect the purpose of the support: giving participants a break from their usual care arrangements while their primary informal supports (family, friends or carers) take a short break, so they can continue in their caring role.
If you need a short break, emergency support, or a temporary stay while your usual carers take time off, living away from home for a short period is made easy with NDIS Short Term Respite (STR/STA). The focus is on the care and support you receive during your stay — whether at home or in a shared setting — rather than the accommodation itself. Our STR in Brisbane provides a relaxed, supportive environment where you continue to receive the care you need.
As a leading provider of NDIS short term respite in Brisbane, we make sure our participants have a comfortable, well-supported stay. We do this by offering first-rate care, spotlessly clean and cosy accommodation, and great locations. Please get in touch to arrange your NDIS short term respite in Brisbane.
(Note: If your NDIS plan still refers to “Short Term Accommodation,” it means the same thing as Short Term Respite — there’s no need to update your plan wording.)

FAQs
What is NDIS Short Term Respite (STR)?
NDIS Short Term Respite — previously called Short Term Accommodation (STA), and before that respite — gives you time apart from your usual care arrangements for a short period. It also gives your primary informal supports (family, friends or carers) a chance to take a short break so they can continue in their caring role. The focus is on the support you receive, whether at home or in a shared setting, rather than the accommodation itself.
Why was the name changed from Short Term Accommodation to Short Term Respite?
The NDIS updated the name in October 2025 to better reflect the purpose of the support. After speaking with participants, families and carers, most felt “respite” better reflects the value of informal supports and the importance of sustaining those caring relationships. The eligibility rules and funding remain the same — only the name has changed. If your plan still says “Short Term Accommodation,” it means the same as “Short Term Respite.”
Who is eligible for Short Term Respite?
You may be able to access short term respite funding if you live with your primary informal supports (or receive daily drop-in support from them), or if you receive disability-related support from your primary informal supports for more than 6 hours a day. Funding is based on the level of support you usually need. You can talk to your my NDIS contact about whether STR is right for your plan.
How much Short Term Respite funding can I receive?
Most eligible participants receive funding for up to 28 days per year, with a maximum of 14 days at a time. Short term respite is funded under your Core Supports budget. You should only pay for the supports you actually use — if you use less than a full day, your provider should adjust the cost so you only pay for what you received.
What services are included in Kuremara's STR in Brisbane?
With Kuremara you receive personal care, medical support through Priority Health Group, access to assistive technology, and comfortable, adaptable accommodation. You can also take part in tailored activities and community access, with 24/7 in-home support available if needed.
How does Short Term Respite benefit participants and their families?
STR gives you a comfortable break in a safe, supportive environment, while your family or carers get a well-deserved rest — helping them continue in their caring role.
Is medical support available during the stay?
Yes. Kuremara partners with Priority Health Group, giving you 24/7 access to medical support, including telehealth consultations with doctors whenever needed.
Is Short Term Respite the same as a holiday or for building new skills?
No. Short term respite is specifically for giving you and your informal supports a break from your usual care arrangements. It is not intended for holidays or for building new skills — if you’d like to develop skills or independence, other supports in your plan can help with that.
How can I arrange Short Term Respite with Kuremara in Brisbane?
You can book your STR stay through our website or by calling 1300 000 799. Our team will help you find the best option for your needs and schedule your stay.
